The
following are the Code of Ethics that are proposed in regard to
Professional Competitive Eaters. This is a work in progress and
the following tenants are being proposed while also asking anybody
who visits the AICE website to send their comments and suggestions.
It is the goal of AICE to establish the tenants with as much input
from eaters and other concerned parties as possible. These proposed
tenants will remain in the developmental status until they are
finalized.
Proposed
Tenant Regarding Compensation
The term professional
implies some level of compensation for performance and services
rendered. Also, Professional Eaters can knowingly perform without
compensation in the event of a charity or any other event in which
their decision was guided by informed consent.
Proposed
Tenant Regarding Responsibility to Sponsor or Like Parties
A Professional Eater
is always aware of his/her commitment to the sponsor he works
with, whether agreement is made orally or in writing. In addition,
a professional eater realizes that positive, constructive and
creative behavior will not only enhance his/her career, but will
also create future opportunities for individual eaters and the
sport of competitive eating.
Proposed
Standards for an Eaters Organization
Professional Eaters
should not join an organization which seeks to remove the individual
rights of the Eaters A professional Eater should not recognize
an organization that claims to be an Eaters Organization but does
not have an Advisory Board of Eaters, and/or other established
procedures an mechanisms which allow communication between the
organization and the individual eater. Also, a Professional Eater
shall not participate in events which are promoted by organizations
which do not respect the Code of Ethics of the competitive eater.
By virtue of representing
itself as an Eaters Organization, it should embody the goals related
to Safety, Rules and Standards for contests, integrity of rankings,
and a spirit of fairness regarding the utilization of Professional
Eaters. These Policies regarding safety, rankings, fairness to
eaters, and contest standards should be available as a body of
written information and these policies should be available to
the membership for review and discussion.
Any Eaters Organization
which promotes events and utilizes Competitive Eaters for this
purpose should account to eaters regarding profit margin, expenditures
and other financial information. If an organization is not willing
to disclose such information, then said organization cannot make
a legitimate claim to being an Eaters Organization.
Proposed
Code of Ethics Regarding the Autonomy of the Individual Eater,
Artistic and Creative Control and Use of the Professional Eaters
Professional Identity
Professional Eaters
recognize the right of other Eaters to pursue prizes, publicity
and recognition without the interference of Sponsors, Promoters
and other like parties unless there has been specific consultation
and agreement between said parties that participating in such
an event would be detrimental to previously contracted parties.
In some instances it should be considered reasonable that said
organizations may evoke a clause that Eaters will not promote
a competing product for six months after date of said competition.
Preferably, Potential competitors and specific eating competitions
should be identified prior to the time of the Eaters participation
so that Eater can make a decision based on Informed Consent. Part
of an Eater's autonomy is also related to the issue of artistic
and creative control. How an Eater is presented and utilized in
a specific event is a matter of respecting an eater's professional
identity and consulting with the eater on how they are introduced
and utilized in a particular event.
